If you’re like me, you might have commitment issues when it comes to purchasing winter outerwear pieces. Good ones can be pricey and new trends make it hard to decide what pieces are worth buying. I’ve definitely made the mistake of buying jackets and coats that were worn a few times in a season and then collected dust the next, but it’s helped me figure out which styles I actually love and wear year over year. I’ve put together a list of my outerwear favorites and some ways I style them
BOMBER JACKET
A bomber = classic and cool. There’s a variety of bomber styles out there like denim, boucle, nylon, but my advice is to stick with a basic leather bomber in a neutral color to keep it versatile.

DENIM JACKET
My denim jacket is multifunctional. For the milder days, I like to wear mine as a statement top with jeans for a denim-on-denim look or over a mini. For the colder days, I’ll layer it under long coats like a trench or wool overcoat to add dimension to my look.

SHEARLING JACKET
Shearling is soft and cozy making it ideal for the colder seasons. I like pieces that have shearling details like a shearling lining that are dense enough to provide warmth but aren’t too thick, allowing for some movement.
Trench Coat
A trench not only works well on its own during the transitional seasons, but it’s also a great outerwear piece to layer over knits or thinner jackets. I wear mine everywhere, for all occasions, and it’s versatility makes it one of my must-have outerwear pieces.

WOOL OVERCOAT
My wool overcoat has saved me on my coldest days. While high quality ones can be pricey, they’re so warm and long lasting making them good investment pieces. There are some really good wool-blend ones as well. Because a wool coat already leans a little bit formal, I prefer mine to be oversized with a relaxed fit.

DOWN/PUFFER JACKET
The trick in finding a good down/puffer jacket is to find one that strikes a balance between functional and chic. A lot of puffer styles can lean too athleisure, limiting how you can style them. I prefer ones that have an oversized and generally looser fit as the form-fitting ones can lean too “ski-wear”.
